My name is Nikema. I’ve been natural most of my life. I’ve worn my hair less than an inch long, I’ve worn perms and texturizers, I’ve had locs and braided locs, I wore extensions once.
Right now is the first time in my adult life that I’m letting my hair just grow without locking it. Since I’ve pretty much always been natural, I was surprised at what hair issues popped up in my transition from locked to loose hair.
I always thought that I was cool with my hair and completely accepted it but at first I didn’t feel pretty or comfortable with my short afro. In fact I wouldn’t even wear my hair out without a flower or some decoration.
I’m still in what I consider an awkward stage of my hair growth. I’m getting comments from my family like, “So what are you doing with your hair.”
My answer is nothing. I’m really just trying to let my hair be and do what it wants to do. I’m also trying to grow out my hairline which was broken off when I took out my locs. Most of the time my hair is loose or covered. I very rarely twist or braid it.
